The Old School
Woodstock

Ask local people if Woodstock is one of the most friendly and attractive communities in England and you get a very clear YES!

The centre of the town has grown slowly and organically for over 1000 years. Clearly we do not like to rush at these things in Woodstock! The careful growth has resulted in a perfect mix of hotels, shops, pubs and restaurants which we love to live with and the discerning traveller delights in discovering and visiting. All this from a town that still has only about 3000 inhabitants.

Within it’s compact town centre are 22 places to eat and drink ranging from charming tea rooms to some of the best restaurants in Oxfordshire while world renowned hotels nestle alongside them. Shopping is no “clone town” experience as not a singe “chain” brand is here. Instead you can delight in a wide variety of independent outlets offering everything from sweetshops (for which England is famous!) to designer clothing and jewellery. Furniture and interior stores abound together with craft, gift and art galleries. Lastly, no town that is a “Gateway to the Cotswolds” would be complete without a helping of antique stores and we have those too.

Woodstock, however, has another unique claim to fame. Here is the World Heritage Site of Blenheim Palace, home to the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace to Sir Winston Churchill. It’s stunningly, breathtaking landscape was designed by “Capability” Brown and the view as you arrive through the town gate has to be one of the best in Britain. Here you will find a magnificent Palace which is one of the finest private houses in the country.

The grounds have many fine long walks, the largest symbolic maze in the world together with a children’s play area and miniature railway. It has featured in many famous films.

Woodstock, the perfect place to base your holiday, is only 8 miles from the lively university town of Oxford, 35 miles from Stratford (home to Shakespeare) and about 60 miles from London and Birmingham, Britain’s largest cities.
