Opened in 1854, the site was donated to Woodstock by the 6th Duke of Marlborough and designed by the great Gothic-Victorian architect, Samuel Teulon. The building remained a school for almost 130 years until it became redundant. This left a wonderful, large building, rich with Victorian features, needing a new lease of life. Close to the centre of the friendly town of Woodstock the Allen family decided to convert it to a contemporary home, while retaining it’s external character.
The gothic influence is especially seen in the stone mullioned windows. These were carefully preserved with modern glass windows set well behind the mullions in order to emphasise the original appearance. This care has been used throughout the conversion so as to successfully blend both the old and the contemporary.
The conversion took 18 months in the planning and building, although more additions were made over the last 5 years. The house features a dramatic 60 ft long, split level, dining and sitting room that reaches to the apex of the roof. This large space, unusual in such a traditional conservation area, was designed for light and with entertaining in mind. It does this wonderfully and has created a loft style conversion while retaining the original character.
Positioned directly opposite the entrance gates to Blenheim Palace ( the home of the Duke of Marlborough) the Old School has an enviable position. It is only steps away from the grounds of the Palace and as close to the shops, restaurants and pubs of Woodstock town centre.
It is now being made available for limited periods only and offers a rare opportunity for an exclusive city centre style of living in one of England’s most desirable small towns.
